In today’s business climate, companies are constantly coming up with new products and services to offer to consumers. While some of these offers deliver large amounts of value or convenience, some of them are just gimmicks that aren’t worth wasting your money on. Here are four of the most common things people spend their money on that just aren’t worth it.
- Luxury Gym Memberships
Maintaining good physical fitness is obviously important, but you don’t need a luxury gym to get in shape. Some gyms charge hundreds of dollars per month and justify their cost with opulent, luxurious facilities that look more like five-star hotels than workout rooms. Do yourself a favor and get a membership at a large gym chain for a fraction of the cost. You’ll not only save money this way but also get access to gym facilities across the country for when you’re traveling.
- 2. Unlimited Wireless Data Plans
Unless you’re making lots of video conference calls from your phone for work, there’s almost no chance that your unlimited data plan can justify the price you pay for it. On average, the typical phone user goes through about 4.6 gigabytes of data per month. If you’re paying for far more than you use, you’re just throwing money away.
- 3. Bottled Water
Few things are as wasteful as buying bottled water. This water is overpriced and is often little more than glorified tap water. Instead, consider getting a reusable water bottle and filling it from your tap at home. With a one-time investment you can save yourself hundreds of dollars on bottled water over the lifespan of a single reusable bottle.
- 4. Name Brand Clothing
Perhaps the most expensive habit some people develop at a young age and hold onto for their entire lives is buying name brand clothing. Inexpensive designer clothes fall apart very quickly, while more expensive options are woefully overpriced. Rather than trying to search for middle ground, consider getting away from designer fashion altogether and wearing cheap, tough, utilitarian clothing on a day-to-day basis. While nicer clothes for special events are completely worthwhile, there’s no sense in having your everyday wardrobe cost hundreds of dollars.
